This page explains how GoldSilver.ai calculates portfolio performance. It covers how positions are valued, how daily returns are computed, how multi-period metrics are compounded, and how buy/sell transactions are handled.
GoldSilver.ai portfolios are models, not brokerage holdings. We make the best supported adjustment when a covered stock changes its listing, is acquired or is delisted. An official company or exchange notice supports each approved event. Historical trades and the old stock's price series are preserved.
A symbol or listing change for the same security keeps the holding. A completed acquisition uses its confirmed share ratio, cash consideration or both. Covered successor shares become a separate holding; cash stays in its stated currency and is converted to USD for performance. These adjustments are internal to the model, not deposits, withdrawals or ordinary trades. Historical performance is recalculated from the event date.
If successor shares trade on an exchange we do not cover, we can close the old model holding into estimated cash at its last stored daily price on or before the event date, in the old stock's currency (pence quotes become pounds of cash). The portfolio shows that price, date and estimate. This fallback does not recreate the acquisition's actual proceeds or the successor's subsequent returns, so model performance can differ materially from real holdings.
Delisting alone does not mean a stock is worthless. If settlement terms are unresolved, the holding stays visibly at its last available valuation, with approximate returns. We do not invent successor quotes or set value to zero. Fractional model shares are retained; fees, taxes, shareholder elections and broker rounding are excluded. Portfolio transactions on or after a retrospectively entered event may need manual review before approval.
Inactive listings leave the active stock catalogue and stop normal price collection. Their existing company page URLs retain the reason, effective date, official notice and historical prices. A buyer link is shown when we cover that company; a buyer name is sufficient otherwise. A company with another active covered listing remains available through that listing.
GoldSilver.ai portfolios let you track the performance of multiple position types in a single view, including stocks, bullion products, metal ounce holdings, Kinesis positions, and cash positions. Performance is calculated once per trading day using market prices. All performance figures are reported in USD.
Performance tracking begins on the day you create a portfolio and add positions. We do not back-simulate performance for dates before a position was added. If you add a bullion coin today, its performance starts from today's market price, not from the price you originally paid.
Each position in your portfolio is valued daily using real market data. The price source depends on the type of position.
Stock positions (including ETFs, closed-end funds, and depositary receipts) are valued using the closing price from the exchange on each trading day. For stocks listed in currencies other than USD (e.g. CAD or GBP), values are converted to USD using the daily exchange rate.
Bullion products are valued using the lowest available dealer sell price from our bullion price tracking system. This is the same "best deal" price shown on product pages. For historical dates, we use the daily lowest price snapshot recorded by our system.
If you want to track total ounces of metal without selecting specific bullion products, you can use metal holdings (such as gold or silver ounce positions). These positions are valued using daily spot-linked market prices. Kinesis positions (such as KAG and KAU) are also valued using daily market prices. Both are treated as USD-valued positions in performance calculations.
Cash positions are used to park capital in your portfolio, for example to reduce volatility while waiting for new entries. Cash is valued at face value (for example, 1 USD = 1 USD), so it typically stabilizes your performance profile compared to fully invested portfolios.
Portfolios on GoldSilver.ai are not constrained like a broker account with a strict buying power balance. Cash positions are therefore a modeling tool, they help you represent how much of your portfolio you currently keep in cash versus invested assets.
The "Buy Price" field is your personal cost-basis reference across all position types. It helps you track gain/loss since your original purchase price.
Portfolio valuation and daily performance are based on market prices from our pricing systems (exchange closes, bullion dealer prices, and metal market prices), not on the buy price you entered.
GoldSilver.ai supports both public and private portfolios. Public portfolios are visible to everyone and are eligible for leaderboards and competitions. Private portfolios are only visible to you.
When you add a position to a public portfolio, the buy price is automatically set to the latest available market price. You cannot manually adjust the buy price for positions in public portfolios. This ensures a level playing field for performance comparisons and competitions. If you want to track a custom cost basis, use a private portfolio instead.
You can change a public portfolio to private at any time. However, a private portfolio cannot be changed to public. This prevents portfolios created with custom buy prices from appearing on public leaderboards. If you want a public portfolio, create it as public from the start.
Performance is calculated once per completed trading day. We compute the total market value of all positions in your portfolio, then compare it to the previous day's value to determine the percentage return.
The total portfolio value is the sum of each position's market value, converted to USD:
The daily percentage return compares today's total value to yesterday's adjusted value:
The first day of a portfolio always shows 0% (the baseline). Actual performance tracking begins from the second trading day onward.
When you buy or sell a position, the transaction changes your portfolio's total value. Without adjustment, buying shares would look like positive performance and selling would look like negative performance, even though no market movement occurred.
To isolate actual market performance from capital flows, we adjust the previous day's baseline value:
This means your performance numbers reflect only actual market movements, not deposits or withdrawals.
Multi-day performance metrics (weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc.) are calculated by compounding daily returns. This is more accurate than simple addition because it accounts for the effect of gains and losses building on each other over time.
All performance metrics are calculated and displayed in USD. For positions denominated in other currencies, we apply daily exchange rate conversions:
Exchange rates are sourced from daily market data. Because exchange rates fluctuate, a stock that is flat in its local currency may still show a small gain or loss in USD due to currency movements.
Performance is only calculated for trading days (Monday through Friday). Weekends are skipped entirely. If a portfolio is created on a weekend, a baseline record with 0% performance is created on Sunday so that tracking can begin the following Monday.
Market holidays are not explicitly skipped. If no closing price is available for a stock on a holiday, the most recent available closing price is used instead.
Portfolio performance is recalculated automatically each night. The system processes all portfolios and fills in any missing performance records. This means if the system experiences downtime, it will catch up on missed days the next time it runs.
Suppose you create a portfolio on Monday with one stock position worth $1,000 USD and one bullion coin valued at $500 USD by our dealer price system.
